Dream
At night the brain builds a whole world — characters, places, a logic of its own — with no input from outside.
Every night, without your asking, a world is built inside you. It has people who speak, places you have never seen, a plot — and you believe it one hundred percent until the moment you open your eyes. Where did all of it come from? No input came in. Everything was created from within.
Level 2 The explanation▾
In sleep the senses are nearly disconnected, and yet the brain produces a rich, full experience — space, time, emotion, narrative. This shows something powerful: the brain is not merely a receiver that processes what is outside, but a generator — it can build an entire reality out of itself.
And this returns us to the question of consciousness: if the dream experience is completely real from the inside, with no outer world to confirm it — what actually makes an experience "real"? The dream is a nightly laboratory for that question.
Level 3 Deeper▾
The same three positions return, each reading the dream differently:
The brain creates. The dream is organized noise — the brain arranges memories and random signals into a story. There is no "there" that one goes to.
The brain filters. In sleep the filtering loosens, so content that waking filters out rises to the surface.
The brain translates. Here the Kabbalistic proposal enters: "a dream is one sixtieth of prophecy" — not that every dream is prophecy, but that in a dream a thinner channel opens, perhaps, to something beyond. This is a proposal, not a proven claim, and is marked as such.
What is known
Dreaming occurs mainly in REM; the brain is highly active yet cut off from the senses.
What is open
Why there is dream experience at all, and what its function is.
Off limits
That a dream is prophecy or verified access to a truth outside the dreamer.
